The National Assembly is the current legislative branch of the Venezuelan government. It is a unicameral body made up of 167 deputies (diputados), who are elected by "universal, direct, personal, and secret" vote on a national party-list proportional representation system. In addition, three deputies are returned on a state-by-state basis, and three seats are reserved for representatives of Venezuela's indigenous peoples. All deputies serve five-year terms.

Nace luego de la aprobación de la Constitución de 1999, reemplazando al anterior Congreso de la República, que era un órgano bicameral. Actualmente es presidida por la Abg Cilia Flores, Diputada por el Distrito Capital y miembro del Partido Socialista Unido de Venezuela. La actual Asamblea se instaló el 5 de enero del 2006 y ejercerá sus funciones hasta el 5 de enero del 2011. En periodos de receso, la Comisión Delegada reune un numero de diputados para atender los asuntos pendientes de la Asamblea hasta el nuevo periodo de sesiones. La Constitución de la República establece que el Poder Legislativo se ejerce por la Asamblea Nacional en su Título V, Capítulo I, Sección Primera, artículo 186. La Asamblea Nacional posee un canal en señal abierta llamado ANTV que funciona desde 2005.
