He represents the Dakshina Kannada constituency of Tulu Nadu region of Karnataka and is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) political party. He was born into an affluent Bunt family at Kunjadi in Palthadi village of Puttur Taluk in Dakshina Kannada Dist. His parents are Late Nedyodiguttu Niranjana Shetty, Kateel and mother N Sheelavathi Shetty.

He finished his primary education from Govt Hr Pry School, Peruvaje, Sullia Tq and continued his further education in Puttur. Nalin Kumar Kateel started his social life by becoming a prachark (full time worker) of Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh (RSS), at the young age of 18 for a period of 12 years. After his father’s death, he took over the of responsibility of managing his family affairs, agriculture and also started his professional career as a civil contractor. He became District general secretary of the party in the year 2004, which office he still holds.
