The Nakoda (also known as Stoney or Lyärhe Nakoda) are a First Nation group, indigenous to both Canada and the United States. The Nakoda Nation comprises three bands: Bearspaw, Chiniki and Wesley. They inhabit large parts of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Montana. Through their language they are related to the Dakota and Lakota nations of the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains, part of the large Sioux Nation.

The name "Stoney" was given them by white explorers because of their technique of using fire-heated rocks to boil broth in rawhide bowls. They are very closely related to the Assiniboine who are also known as Stone Sioux.

Die Mitglieder der Stoney sind Nachfahren der Dakota, Lakota und Nakota, die einst ein großes Gebiet der Prärie und der Rocky Mountains in Nordamerika bevölkerten. Im Jahr 1877 wurde ihnen im Treaty 7 von der britischen Krone Unabhängigkeit zugesichert. Zur Sicherung ihrer wirtschaftlichen Zukunft plant die Stoney Nakoda Nation derzeit (Stand 2006) den Bau eines Spielkasinos, der jedoch innerhalb des Stammes umstritten ist . Mit Stoney wird auch die Sprache der Stoney bezeichnet, die zur Familie der Sioux-Sprachen gehört. Sie ist im Aussterben begriffen und wird von unter 35-jährigen kaum noch flüssig gesprochen (Stand 2006). Es gibt Bemühungen, sie am Leben zu erhalten.
