Nonetheless The Naked Lunch remained the title used for the 1968 and 1974 Corgi Books editions, and the novel is often known by the alternative name, especially in the UK where these editions circulated. The novel was included in Time magazine's "100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005". David Cronenberg released a film of the same title based upon the novel and other Burroughs writings in 1991.

Naked Lunch gilt als Burroughs Hauptwerk und ist neben On the Road von Jack Kerouac und dem Gedicht Howl von Allen Ginsberg das wichtigste literarische Dokument der Beat Generation. Der Roman rief bei seinem Erscheinen einen Skandal hervor und wurde zunächst 1965 in einem Urteil des Supreme Court in Massachusetts, USA verboten. In dem Urteil hieß es: "Ein widerlicher Gifthauch ununterbrochener Perversion, literarischer Abschaum". Andere Quellen geben an, es sei 1962 Aufgrund von Obszönitäten (im Besonderen Kindsmord und Pädophilie) verboten worden. Im Jahre 1966, wurde das Verbot allerdings in einem Gerichtsverfahren wieder aufgehoben. Das lange Zeit als unverfilmbar geltende Werk wurde 1991 von David Cronenberg unter dem Titel Naked Lunch – Nackter Rausch frei adaptiert. Der Roman selbst behandelt in unkonventioneller und radikaler Manier damalige Tabuthemen wie Drogensucht, Homosexualität, Gewalt, Wahnsinn etc. Naked Lunch besitzt keine wirkliche, lineare Handlung, vielmehr sind verschiedene Handlungsstränge aneinandergereiht, die scheinbar keinen logischen Zusammenhang aufweisen. Dies entspricht der von Brion Gysin zufällig entwickelten Cut-up-Methode, bei der zusammenhängende Texte auseinandergeschnitten und neu angeordnet werden. Burroughs setzte diese Methode vor allem in seinen späteren Romanen vermehrt ein.
