Nakanoshima is a volcanic island located in the Tokara Islands, part of the Ryukyu Islands, Japan. It is the largest and most populous island of the islands in Toshima village. The island had 167 inhabitants as of 2004. The dimensions of the island are 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) by 5 kilometres (3.1 mi). The northern end of the island is dominated by Otake, an active volcano which last erupted in 1914. The mountain was mined for sulphur until 1944.

  • トカラ列島（薩南諸島、中部） 中之島（なかのしま）はトカラ列島に所属する島で、鹿児島県鹿児島郡十島村に属する。面積は34.47km²。周囲30km、最高点は御岳（トカラ富士）の979m。人口は155人。 十島村で最も人口が多く、かつては村役場の所在地であった。村役場の移転後も唯一支所や駐在所、民俗資料館や天文台が置かれ、実質村の中心地である。 中之島天文台は、九州最大級のカセグレン式60cm反射式望遠鏡を設置する。一度に多人数の観望を可能にするモニター装置も備えるが、利用に際しては要予約である。 島内を周回する道路は多数存在するものの未舗装の箇所が多い。 島内はリュウキュウチクの生育が著しく、これらの未舗装の道の中には通行不可能なったものも少なくない。 温泉（公衆浴場）が数か所存在する。西海岸沿いに設けられた東区温泉、西区温泉は、ともに乳白色のミョウバン・硫黄・塩分を含んだ天然温泉である。泉質：硫黄泉、効能：神経痛・筋肉痛・痔疾・冷え性という。 御岳は1914年に噴火した活火山で、テレビ中継局の中之島中継局や携帯電話等の種々の電波塔が設置されている。かつては硫黄の採掘も行なわれていた。今でも頂上の火口や東側山腹等から噴気が盛んである。山中では野生化したトカラヤギの群れが見られる。 他のトカラ列島の島々と同様、肉牛の牧畜が盛んである。
