NIS+ is a directory service developed by Sun Microsystems to replace its older Network Information Service. It is designed to eliminate the need to duplicate configuration data such as user accounts, host names and addresses, printer information and NFS disk mounts on individual systems, instead using a central repository on a master server, simplifying system administration. NIS and NIS+ are only similar in their purpose and name; otherwise, they have completely different implementations. NIS+ differs from NIS in the following ways: NIS+ is hierarchical. NIS+ is based around Secure RPC (servers must authenticate clients and vice-versa). NIS+ may be replicated (replicas are read-only). NIS+ implements permissions on directories, tables, columns and rows. NIS+ also implements permissions on operations, such as being able to use nisping to transfer changed data from a master to a replica. Prior to the release of Solaris 9 in 2002, Sun announced its intent to remove NIS+ from Solaris in a future release and now recommends that customers instead use an LDAP-based lookup scheme. NIS+ functionality was not removed from either Solaris 9 or Solaris 10, although both releases include tools to migrate NIS+ data to an LDAP server.

NIS+ permette di immagazzinare in un nodo centrale informazioni utili per i client in rete, come elenchi di utenti e password home directory, locazione dei servizi accessori, ecc. NIS+ gestisce queste informazioni in tabelle, come un database, alcune delle quali sono preimpostate, mentre altre possono essere aggiunte a piacimento e modificate tramite una suite di comandi appositi. Ad esempio la tabella che contiene i profili degli utenti è passwd. org_dir. I client devono opportunamente essere configurati per avere accesso al server NIS+ e per usarlo come default server per i servizi che esso eroga e che si vuole che il client utilizzi. Per questo esiste il file /etc/nsswitch. conf. Il sistema può essere gerarchico, contenere sottodomini e possedere server principali (master server) e di backup (replica server). Entrambi i tipi di server contengono dati e tabelle ed i cambiamenti sono propagati incrementalmente attraverso l'eventuale albero. NIS+ utilizza sia l'autenticazione tramite password criptata (in rete viene trasferito solo l'hash della password, mentre nel NIS la password direttamente in chiaro) e l'autorizzazione tramite la modifica dei permessi sulle tabelle del server.
