In the freethought movement, Futrell is vice-president and past president of Atheists and Other Freethinkers, and sits on the board of directors of the American Humanist Association and the Atheist Alliance International. She has been an educator at all levels of instruction, from an elementary open classroom through university professor. Futrell was a tenured Associate Professor at Gallaudet University for the Deaf in Washington, DC. She has also co-authored several books with her husband, including, The Well-Trained Computer: Designing Systematic Instructional Materials for the Classroom Microcomputer (1984), Teachers, Computers, and Curriculum: Microcomputers in the Classroom (1999), and Different Drummers: Nonconforming Thinkers in History (1999).
