Robinsons inspiratie voor het nummer was zijn vrouw Claudette Robinson, net als hem en White lid van The Miracles. In eerste instantie schreef hij het nummer dan ook voor zijn eigen groep. Toen het klaar was besloot hij het echter niet met The Miracles op te nemen, maar met The Temptations. Dit kwam doordat hij David Ruffin van The Temptations tijdens een optreden lead had horen zingen. Rond die tijd waren het Eddie Kendricks en Paul Williams die bijna alles lead zongen bij The Temptations, maar dat optreden kreeg Ruffin een kans. Smokey Robinson vond zijn leadpartij zo goed dat hij besloot een nummer voor de groep te schrijven waar Ruffin lead op zong. Hij vond "My Girl" goed bij de stem van Ruffin passen en besloot het nummer daarom niet met The Miracles, maar met The Temptations op te nemen. Na het succes van "My Girl" was het David Ruffin die voortaan lead zong bij The Temptations en sporadisch Paul Williams of Eddie Kendricks nog maar. Dankzij het succes van "My Girl" en opvolgers als "Ain't Too Proud To Beg", "Beauty Is Only Skin Deep" en "I Wish It Would Rain" kreeg Ruffin een steeds groter ego. Hij kwam bijvoorbeeld te laat bij optredens en daagde niet op bij repetities. Ook wilde hij dat de naam van de groep veranderd werd in "David Ruffin & The Temptations". Vanwege zijn grote ego werd Ruffin vier jaar na het succes van "My Girl", in 1968, dan ook ontslagen van de groep. "My Girl" is vanwege zijn populariteit vele malen gecoverd. Mede-Motown artiesten als Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, een instrumentale versie van Billy Preston en The Jackson 5 coverden het nummer. Ook de schrijver van het nummer, Smokey Robinson, besloot het nummer toch op te nemen met The Miracles en het verscheen dan ook op hun album "Time Out For Smokey Robinson & The Miracles". Ook niet-Motownacts als The Mamas & The Papas, die er een #15 hit mee hadden, en Otis Redding coverden het nummer.
