The 2007 Census Estimate shows a population of 187,046 . Its county seat and only city is Columbus, Georgia, with which it has been a consolidated city-county since the beginning of 1971. It is a part of the Columbus, Georgia-Alabama Metropolitan Area.

The Chattahoochee River forms its western border with Alabama.
