Mu Sagittarii (μ Sgr / μ Sagittarii) is a star system in the constellation Sagittarius. It also has the traditional name Polis, from a Coptic word meaning foal. In ancient Chinese astronomy, it is the 1st of 6 stars in the Dipper or 'South Dipper' mansion of the Black Tortoise of the North. The stars in the Polis system are designated Polis A through Polis E. Polis is more than 3000 light years from Earth.

In ancient Chinese astronomy, it is the 1st of 6 stars in the Dipper or 'South Dipper' mansion of the Black Tortoise of the North. The stars in the Polis system are designated Polis A through Polis E. Polis is more than 3000 light years from Earth. The primary component in this system, Polis A, is a type B giant star with a total luminosity of 180,000 times that of the Sun and a radius of 115 times solar. Its mass is 23 times the solar mass while it has a surface temperature of 11,100 kelvins. Polis A is an eclipsing binary, bringing the total of stars in the system to six. The primary component is a spectral type B8 supergiant and the companion is a type B2 giant. The orbital period of the binary is 180.55 days. Due to occultation of the primary by the companion, the apparent magnitude of Polis A varies between +3.84 and +3.96. The remaining components are very weakly bound to the Polis system.

Polis está clasificada tradicionalmente como una supergigante blanco-azulada de tipo espectral B8 Iap, pero la gran distancia que nos separa de ella, al menos 3000 años luz, hace difícil su catalogación. Su pertenencia a la asociación estelar Sagittarius OB1 la situaría a unos 3600 años luz de la Tierra. Considerando esta última distancia como la más precisa, sus parámetros son: luminosidad 180.000 veces mayor que el Sol, radio de 115 radios solares y masa de 23 masas solares. Dada su enorme masa y su estado evolutivo, su edad se estima en sólo 8 millones de años. Polis es además una estrella binaria eclipsante: cada 180,6 días su brillo desciende 0,08 magnitudes cuando una estrella acompañante pasa por delante de la estrella supergigante. Se piensa que la acompañante es una estrella de tipo B1.5 V. Cuatro estrellas más, llamadas Polis B, C, D y E completan el sistema estelar. Dada su gran distancia a Polis A no se puede considerar que orbiten alrededor de un centro de masas común, ya que el vínculo es muy débil.
