The station is on Huddersfield Line operated by Northern Rail and is 5 miles south west of from Leeds City Station. The station is at one of end of the 2-mile (3.2 km) long Morley Tunnel, which goes underneath the town. The station was opened by the LNWR in 1848 and was known as "Morley Low" station due to its low lying location.

However, this was removed due to complaints by many people who did not disembark at the station, believing it to not be the actual Morley railway station.
