- The Montreux Jazz Festival is the best-known music festival in Switzerland and one of the most prestigious in Europe; it is held annually in early July in Montreux on the shores of Lake Geneva.
- Das Montreux Jazz Festival ist ein jährlich im Juli stattfindendes Musikfestival in der Schweizer Stadt Montreux (VD) am Genfersee. 1967 auf Initiative des Pianisten Géo Voumard (1920–2008; zeitweise bei Hazy Osterwald, schon in den 1950er-Jahren mit eigener Radiosendung) und des Radio-Journalisten Lance Tschannen gegründet, entwickelte sich das Montreux Jazz Festival unter Leitung des damaligen stellvertretenden Direktors des Fremdenverkehrsvereins von Montreux, Claude Nobs bald zu einem bekannten Musikfestival in Europa. Jazzmusiker wie Les McCann, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Count Basie, Charles Lloyd (dessen Quartett mit Keith Jarrett, Cecil McBee und Jack DeJohnette 1967 auf dem ersten Festival spielte), Art Blakey, Dexter Gordon, Oscar Peterson, Herbie Hancock, Lionel Hampton, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis, Randy Brecker, Carmen McRae, Pat Metheny, Pasadena Roof Orchestra, Gil Evans (1974), Keith Jarrett u. a. pilgerten viele Sommer zu ihren teilweise einzigen Europaauftritten nach Montreux. Zwar deutet der Name auf den programmatischen Schwerpunkt Jazz hin, doch traten schon früh auch Musiker aus dem Rock- und Popbereich auf. Auf der Künstlerliste des Festivals aus den eher jazzferneren Stilrichtungen stehen Musiker wie Marianne Faithfull, Led Zeppelin, Frank Zappa, Queens of the Stone Age, Simon & Garfunkel, Mike Oldfield, Sonic Youth, Jethro Tull, Carlos Santana, Audioslave, Peter Tosh, Roberta Flack, Leonard Cohen, Ofra Haza, James Brown, John Lee Hooker, Paolo Conte, Nina Corti, Etta James, Johnny Cash, Van Morrison, Marvin Gaye, George Benson, Keziah Jones, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Deep Purple, Prince, u. a. Auf besondere Weise hat das Montreux-Festival in einem Rocksong Musikgeschichte geschrieben: in Smoke on the Water von Deep Purple. Im Songtext heißt es: "We all came out to Montreux on the Lake Geneva shoreline / To make records with a mobile - We didn't have much time / Frank Zappa & the Mothers were at the best place around / But some stupid with a flare gun burned the place to the ground / Smoke on the water – A fire in the sky". Während eines Konzertes im Dezember 1971 von Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention brach ein Feuer aus und brannte die gesamte Räumlichkeit nieder. Deep Purple konnten beobachten, wie sich Rauch über dem Genfersee ausbreitete. Norman Granz setzte in den 1970er-Jahren seine früheren Jazz at the Philharmonic Erfolge mit der Organisation von Jazz at Montreux Konzerten fort. Der Charme des von Kritikern gelegentlich als „Supermarkt“ bezeichneten Programms liegt in der Fülle und Parallelität von Jazz, Pop, Rock, Weltmusik (insbesondere aus Brasilien) und anderem in kurzer Zeit am selben Ort. Die gegenüber der konservierten Musik grösseren Freiheitsgrade bei Liveauftritten generell und in Montreux zusätzlich die verbindende Kommunikationsfreude des Festivalleiters Claude Nobs verleiten auch Stars nicht selten zu musikalischen Grenzgängen und stilübergreifenden Jamsessions, einige sind auf mittlerweile historischen Plattenaufnahmen dokumentiert (beispielsweise auf „Casino Lights - Live at Montreux“, Warner, 1982). Mittlerweile kommen alle Jahre internationale Jazz-, Rock- und Popgrössen, aber auch regionale und lokale Musiker zum offiziellen Festivalprogramm oder zum ebenfalls umfangreichen Off-Festival auf die insgesamt 17 Bühnen, darunter das Auditorium Stravinski und die Miles Davis Hall. Nachdem das erste Festival nur drei Tage dauerte, vergrösserte es sich Jahr für Jahr, bis es 1977 seine Rekordlänge mit 23 Tagen erreichte. Inzwischen hat sich das Programm, das jährlich über 200.000 Besucher nach Montreux lockt, bei etwa 16 Tagen etabliert. 2006 gestaltete der Maler Burton Morris die offiziellen Festival-Plakate. Das Eröffnungskonzert des Jazzfestivals am 30. Juni 2006 fand zu Ehren des legendären türkischen Jazzproduzenten Nesuhi Ertegün und seines Bruders, des Gründers von Atlantic Records, Ahmet Ertegün statt.

Hay varios DVD que muestran una serie de grandes artistas de diversos generos actuando en el festival. Originalmente apenas um festival de jazz, a partir da década de 1970 passou a incorporar músicos de todos os estilos. Atualmente dura cerca de duas semanas e atrai um público estimado em duzentas mil pessoas. Vários artistas brasileiros como Gilberto Gil, Elis Regina, Gal Costa, Hermeto Pascoal, Marisa Monte, Milton Nascimento, Titãs, Paralamas do Sucesso, Alceu Valença e Elba Ramalho já se apresentaram no festival.
