Deze beslissing werd discreet door hem genomen en niet in de vorm van een Koninklijk Besluit afgekondigd. Door deze discrete beslissing bestaat nog steeds wereldwijd het misverstand als zou het Belgisch vorstenhuis nog altijd de naam van Saksen-Coburg-Gotha dragen. Deze familienaam werd gewijzigd in: van België, en zoals het betaamt voor het staatshoofd van een meertalig land heeft deze familienaam een officiële variant in elk van de drie landstalen. In het Frans is dit: de Belgique, en in het Duits: von Belgien. De echtgenoot van Astrid van BelgiëPrinses Astrid van België, Lorenz van Oostenrijk-EsteLorenz, Aartshertog van Oostenrijk-Este kreeg in 1995 de titel van Prins(es) van BelgiëPrins van België waardoor hun kinderen ook deze familienaam dragen. De kinderen van Filip van BelgiëPrins Filip van België en van Laurent van BelgiëPrins Laurent van België dragen logischerwijs ook deze naam.
