- The Mixtecan languages constitute a branch of the Otomanguean language family of Mexico. The Mixtecan branch includes the Trique (or Triqui) languages, spoken by about 24,500 people; Cuicatec, spoken by about 15,000 people; and the large group of Mixtec languages proper, spoken by about 511,000 people. Again, the Mixtec languages proper are a grouping within the Mixtecan branch of the Otomanguean family. Virtually all of the remainder of this article is about Mixtec proper; for Cuicatec and Trique, see the separate articles. The internal classification of the Mixtecan branch, i.e. , the subgrouping between Trique, Cuicatec, and Mixtec proper, is an open question. As to the Mixtec languages proper, identifying how many there are poses challenges at the level of linguistic theory. Depending on the criteria for distinguishing between a difference of dialects and a difference of languages, there may be as many as 50 different Mixtec languages

Es tracta de la quarta llengua indígena per nombre de parlants a Mèxic, amb un total de 446.236 individus de més de 5 anys (l'any 2000, segons l'INEGI, que no contempla com a indioparlants els menors de cinc anys; la Comissió Nacional per al Desenvolupament dels Pobles Indígenes o CDI, calcula la població mixtecoparlant en més de mig milió, fet que col·loca aquesta llengua com la tercera més parlada al país). Sin embargo, debido a la migración causada por la extrema pobreza de esta región, se ha extendido a los núcleos urbanos más importantes de México (especialmente en el Estado de México y el Distrito Federal), a ciertas zonas agrícolas como el Valle de San Quintín en Baja California, e incluso en Estados Unidos, donde las nuevas generaciones suelen ser bilingües, pero de mixteco e inglés. Debido a la fragmentación del territorio mixteco, el idioma se ha separado en diversas variantes (seis según la CDI, más de treinta según el Instituto Lingüístico de Verano) (nombre con el que se conoce en México a SIL International) que a veces son ininteligibles entre sí.

Veel taalkundigen zien het Mixteeks als dialectcontinuüm in plaats van als taal, maar om praktische redenen wordt het vaak als één taal geizen. In het totaal hebben de verschillende dialecten van het Mixteeks 423.216 sprekers . Mixteeks wordt al sinds precolumbiaanse tijden gesproken. De taal heeft zich redelijk kunnen handhaven, en is tegenwoordig de vierde meest gesproken taal van Mexico. Alleen Spaans, Nahuatl en Yucateeks Maya worden door meer mensen gesproken. Ongeveer 70% van de Mixteken beheerst het Mixteeks. Een deel daarvan is eentalig maar de meesten zijn tweetalig en spreken naast het Mixteeks ook Spaans of, voor degenen die in de Verenigde Staten wonen, Engels. Opvallende aan het Mixteeks is het dat het evenals de andere talen van de Oto-Manguean taalfamilie een toontaal is; het Mixteeks kent verschillende toonhoogten (in de meeste varianten onderscheiden taalkundigen drie toonhoogten). Verder is het grote aantal dubbele medeklinkers opvallend. In recente jaren is er een organisatie opgericht, die poogt het Mixteeks te standaardariseren, vooralsnog zonder succes.

W wyniku migracji istnieją grupy użytkowników również w mieście Meksyk oraz w Kalifornii. Należy do grupy (rodziny) mixtekańskiej otomangueskiej fyli językowej. Z powodu rozdrobnienia teryterialnego jest mocno zróżnicowany dialektycznie - Instituto Lingüístico de Verano wyróżnia aż 51 dialektów, często wzajemnie niezrozumiałych, z tego względu niektórzy badacze traktują mixtec raczej jako tzw. makrojęzyk, czyli grupę spokrewnionych języków. Jak dotąd próby ustandaryzowania języka i ortografii nie przyniosły oczekiwanych rezultatów
