Mission San Rafael Arcángel was founded in 1817 as a medical asistencia ("sub-mission") of the Mission San Francisco de Asís as a hospital to treat sick Native Americans of the Bay Area, making it Alta California's first sanitarium. The weather was much better in the North Bay than in San Francisco, and helped the ill to get better. Elle resservit par la suite en tant que quartier général de John Charles Frémont lors des batailles organisées pour faire de la Californie un état des États-Unis. Aujourd'hui la mission se situe à côté de l'église de Saint Raphael, sur le site de l'hôpital originel, et présente aux visiteurs un petit musée et un magasin de souvenirs.
