Mirko Dražen Grmek was a Croatian and French historian of medicine, writer and scientist. He was one of the pioneers and founders of the history of medicine. His entire opus promotes the historical research of medical knowledge and practices by means of contemporary scientific methods, especially the study of the formation of ideas in specific societies and periods. He put forward the theory of pathocenosis, the coexistence of all diseases in a specific time, place and society.

Er führte den Begriff der Pathozönose ein, der die Gesamtheit der Krankheiten meint, die zu einer bestimmten Zeit an einem bestimmten Ort und in einer bestimmten Gesellschaft auftreten. Eine enge Mitarbeiterin war Danielle Gourevitch. 1991 wurde Grmek mit der George-Sarton-Medaille ausgezeichnet, dem höchst renommierten Preis für Wissenschaftsgeschichte der von George Sarton und Lawrence Joseph Henderson gegründeten History of Science Society (HSS).

Chiuderà la sua carriera universitaria come docente di Storia delle scienze biologiche e mediche alla Sorbonne di Parigi. Grmek, come storico della scienza e della medicina, concepiva l’uomo e la società quali enti composti da elementi corporei e psichici, interagenti attraverso una complessa vicenda di particelle che nascono, vivono, crescono e muoiono. La storia della medicina - dai tempi degli egizi e dei greci alla sorprendente tecnologia dei tempi moderni - è dunque soltanto una lotta per alleviare il peso della malattia e per procrastinare la morte, e non già per eliminarle. Senza di esse, infatti, non esisterebbe la vita. La salute fisica e mentale dell’uomo - secondo Grmek - passa anche attraverso l’accettazione di tale semplice e profonda certezza.
