The American Kennel Club recognizes only three colors for the Miniature Schnauzer: salt-and-pepper, black-and-silver, and solid black. Solid white is considered a disqualification, although, a small patch of white is allowed on the solid black. In the United Kingdom, the small white patch on a solid black is also considered a fault . Solid white, as well as other colors, such as parti (multi) colored, chocolate and liver colored schnauzers are available on the pet trade and can be registered as pure-breds by some organizations, but are not currently recognized by any legitimate clubs for conformation shows.

El próposito de ring de exposición es evaluar si el reproducir dicho ejemplar seria meritorio para avanzar hacia el schnauzer descrito en el standard the perfección racial. Los criadores de exposición comúnmente retienen un ejemplar de la camada para su programa de crianza y el resto es colocado entre quienes no desean exhibir sino buscan un schnauzer para enriquecer sus vidas. Estos ejemplares son colocados con contratos de esterilización ya que la inmensa mayoría de los schnauzer no deben ser reproducidos y de esta manera se preserva y protege la raza.
