- The stencil duplicator or mimeograph machine (often abbreviated to mimeo) is a low-cost printing press that works by forcing ink through a stencil onto paper. Along with spirit duplicators and hectographs, mimeographs were for many decades used to print short-run office work, classroom materials, and church bulletins. They also were critical to the development of early fanzines because their low cost and availability enabled publication of amateur writings. These technologies began to be supplanted by photocopying and cheap offset printing in the late 1960s. Although in mid-range quantities, mimeographs remain more economical and energy efficient, easier-to-use photocopying and offset have replaced mimeography almost entirely in developed countries, although it continues to be a working technology in developing countries, since some machines are hand-cranked and need no electricity.
- Die Mimeographie ist ein seit 1873 durch Thomas Alva Edison entwickeltes und 1876 patentiertes Kopierverfahren, bei dem aus einem Fasergewebe, aus dem zum Beispiel durch Druck von Lettern eine farbstoffundurchlässige Schicht entfernt wird und somit ein spiegelbildliches Zwischenoriginal erstellt wird. Dieses Zwischenoriginal, auch Matrize genannt, wird dann auf einen Druckzylinder gespannt, der an den Stellen, wo die farbstoffundurchlässige Schicht entfernt wurde, Druckfarbe aufnehmen kann und dann auf das zu bedruckende Papier gepresst wird. Dieses Verfahren erlaubte zunächst zwar höhere Auflagen als die bis dahin verbreitete Kopierpresse, ist aber schnell durch andere Kopiertechniken abgelöst worden, wie zum Beispiel durch die bald aufkommende Hektographie und deutlich später dann auch durch Fotokopierer.

La stampa a ciclostile lega il suo nome in modo indissolubile alla pratica delle fanzine sino agli anni ottanta, quando anche per queste edizioni fu sostituita dalla xerografia (fotocopia). Tuttavia, non richiedendo energia elettrica per il suo funzionamento, trova ancora applicazione nel cosiddetto terzo mondo.
