He was drafted by the New York Rangers in the 1988 NHL Supplemental Draft out of the Skating Saints of Saint Lawrence University. He is a product of Northwood School in Lake Placid, New York. Hurlbut played in 23 games for the Rangers during the 1992–93 season before parting ways with the franchise.

He now is the assistant coach for the St. Lawrence University mens ice hockey team.
