Die Stadt ist daher in den letzten Jahren stark gewachsen und sehr modern. Das Panafrikanische Parlament der Afrikanischen Union verlegte 2008 seinen Sitz von Addis Abeba nach Midrand. Zudem ist in der Stadt das Midrand Graduate Institute ansässig. Der Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit, die einzige Grand-Prix-Rennstrecke Südafrikas, befindet sich auf dem Gebiet Midrands.

Though no longer an independent town, the name Midrand is still on common use to denote the suburbs around the N1 highway north of the Jukskei River up to the border with City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality. (This portion of the N1 highway is also known as the Ben Schoeman Highway. ) Suburbs that are generally regarded as being in Midrand include among others: Carlswald, Crowthorne, Glen Austin, Halfway House, Halfway Gardens, Kyalami, Vorna Valley and Randjesfontein.
