- The microKORG is a MIDI-capable virtual analog synthesizer/vocoder from Korg featuring high-quality DSP analog modelling. The keyboard is built in such a way that it is essentially a Korg MS-2000 with programmable step arpeggiator (MS-2000 has only six simple patterns), a less advanced vocoder (8 bands instead of 16 bands found on the MS-2000), lack of motion sequencing (MS-2000 had three motion sequences), lack of an XLR microphone input, and in a smaller case with fewer real-time control knobs. The microKORG has been a popular success, being used by a diverse range of musicians such as Devo, who currently have one as part of their live setup, Justice, Duran Duran, Jean Michel Jarre, The Killers, Arsonists Get All the Girls, Chromeo, Retarded Cobras, Crystal Castles, Digitalism, Editors, Gordon Moakes of Bloc Party, Handsome Furs, Metronomy, Kings of Leon, Soulwax, Beast, LCD Soundsystem, Mylo, Death Cab for Cutie, Goose, Mates of State, Elephants Passing, The Neptunes, The Mae Shi, Owl City, Polysics, Chrome Hoof, Boots With Spurs, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Attack Attack!, Röyksopp and KAzeta among many others. In an interview for Korg's official website in late 2004, Howlett said that "The microKORG is wicked. You've only got to put it on big speakers to hear the depth it's got. It's got so much power for a little keyboard. " From the same source, in January 2004, Torbjorn Brundtland of Röyksopp stated that "of course we use the microKorg, which is a really powerful instrument. It has the same quality of abstract effects that the MS20 has. " The microKORG was released in 2002, and is still in production as of 2009. In September 2007 Korg released a limited edition of the microKORG with reverse-color keys although the functionality was otherwise unchanged. At NAMM 2008, a successor called the microKORG XL was introduced and will be available early 2009.
- Microkorg è uno strumento musicale digitale, sintetizzatore prodotto dalla Korg nel 2002 e tutt'ora in commercio. È di dimensioni ridotte, concepito per essere trasportato facilmente e quindi utilizzabile anche a batterie, con un look retrò, sfrutta lo stesso motore sonoro di sintesi dell'MS2000. Ha 37 tasti (3 ottave) che sono di dimensioni ridotte rispetto ai classici tasti di un sintetizzatore normale, ma nonostante ciò hanno una buona risposta e sensibilità al tocco. Nella parte alta dispone di 5 manopole, tra cui cutoff, resonance, attack, release e tempo, su cui si può intervenire modellando il suono, ma possono inoltre essere assegnate ad altre funzionalità di editing in tempo reale del sintetizzatore; inolte, nella parte alta, dispone di un microfono utilizzabile come vocoder. Il Microkorg comprende 128 programmi organizzati in 8 categorie tra cui: Trance, Techno/House, Electronica, DnB Breaks, HipHop/Vintage, Retro, SndFX/Hits and Vocoder. I suoni sono qualitativamente buoni e ha una polifonia limitata a 4 voci. Il motore sonoro è composto da due oscillatori con 7 forme d'onda editabili per ognuno e da 2 LFO. Nel menù dello stesso è possibile editare i parametri tra cui i filtri, la risonanza ed altri, tra cui gli effetti chorus/flanger, phaser ed esemble. Comprende anche un arpeggiatore editabile su 8 steps e due tasti che permettono di selezionare le ottave lungo la tastiera (-3 oct/+3 oct). Sul retro ha 3 entrate MIDI (in/out/thru), 2 entrate audio regolabili con volume, e 3 uscite audio (L/R e phones); funziona con un trasformatore 9V o con 6 pile tipo AA. I suoni sono anche editabili via midi tramite pc o mac, utilizzando un software Korg distribuito gratuitamente sul proprio sito. L'attuale valore di mercato è tra i 350 e i 450 Euro. Tra gli artisti che utilizzano questo sintetizzatore troviamo Air, Atomizer, Bare Naked Ladies, Beck, Prodigy, Yesterdays, The Killers, KMFDM, Röyksopp, LCD Soundsystem, Jean-Michel Jarre, My Silver Booster, Nick Rhodes (dei Duran Duran), Pet Shop Boys e gli italiani Luca Cirillo e McNamara Playground Heroes.
