He was elected MLA for Richmond in March 1998. He was 25 at election which made him the youngest member of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly this century. He became the youngest minister ever to be appointed to cabinet in the history of Nova Scotia in December, 1998 when he was named as Minister of the Environment and Minister responsible for administration of the Youth Secretariat Act. He was re-elected in the 1999, 2003, and 2006 elections. After the 2006 election and Francis MacKenzie's resignation, Samson served as interim leader for nearly a year until Stephen McNeil was elected leader. Samson himself decided not to be a candidate in the leadership race. He is currently the Liberal Party Caucus Whip, and the critic for Intergovernmental Affairs, Justice, the Human Rights Act, Energy, and Aboriginal Affairs.
