- Michel Herr (born February 16, 1949, Brussels) is a Belgian pianist, composer and arranger active in the fields of jazz and film music. Since the seventies he has been active on the European Jazz scene. He appeared on more than 60 jazz albums. Since 1984, he regularly played piano and keyboards with harmonica player Toots Thielemans. He performed with him throughout the world, played many major festivals and participated in many records, TV shows and film soundtracks. Michel Herr had the opportunity to play with great American musicians like Joe Lovano, Chet Baker, Lee Konitz, Art Farmer, Joe Henderson, Johnny Griffin, Pepper Adams, Bill Frisell, as well as many top European musicians, such as Palle Mikkelborg, Riccardo Del Fra, Palle Danielsson, Richard Galliano and the best Belgian musicians: Philip Catherine, Steve Houben, Bert Joris and others. He led several bands, from the trio to the big band, a.o. a European quintet with Wolfgang Engstfeld (sax) and Bert Joris (tp), a nonet named "Life Lines", etc... in which he presents his compositions. He wrote for numerous jazz ensembles : WDR Big Band, ACT big Band, the Brussels Jazz Orchestra (a.o. with singer David Linx, the Metropole Orchestra, etc... 2008 sees the release of a double album of his big band compositions with the Brussels Jazz Orchestra, "The Music of Michel Herr". He is also active in the field of film music.
- Michel Herr ist ein belgischer Jazzpianist, Komponist und Arrangeur. Herr ist seit den 1970er Jahren in der Jazz-Szene aktiv. 1974 trat er mit Wolfgang Engstfelds und Uli Beckerhoffs Gruppe Jazz-Track auf. Er spielte u.a. mit Joe Lovano, Joe Henderson, Chet Baker, Archie Shepp, Charlie Mariano, Johnny Griffin, Lee Konitz, Bill Frisell, Randy Brecker, Art Farmer, Pepper Adams, John Abercrombie, Lew Tabackin, Palle Mikkelborg, Palle Danielsson, Paolo Fresu, Aldo Romano, Riccardo Del Fra, Jean-François Jenny-Clark, Daniel Humair, Richard Galliano, Norma Winstone, Philip Catherine, Steve Houben und Bert Joris. Seit 1984 war er regelmäßiger Begleiter von Toots Thielemans auf seinen Tourneen und Konzerten. Herr leitete im Lauf der Zeit mehrere eigene Gruppen, beginnend mit der Fusion Band „Solis Lacus“ in den 1970er Jahren. Mit dem Saxophonisten Wolfgang Engstfeld leitete er ein Quartett (mit dem Schlagzeuger Leroy Lowe und wechselnden Bassisten), mit Lowe und Hein van de Geyn ein Trio („Intuitions“ 1989), mit Engstfeld, Bert Joris, Riccardo Del Fra und Dré Pallemaerts das „Michel Herr European Quintet“ („Notes of Life“, Igloo), mit Streichern erweitert zu „Michel Herr Unexpected Encounters“ und die neunköpfige „Michel Herr & Life Line“ (u.a. mit Houben, Bert Joris). Mit seinen Bands spielt er häufig eigene Kompositionen, die er auch z.B. für das „Brussels Jazz Orchestra“ (Suite für David Linx 2007) und die von ihm geleitete ACT Big Band arrangiert. Außerdem spielt er im „Fabrice Alleman Quartet“ („Loop the Loop“ 1998, „Side of Life“).

Sinds 1984 speelt hij regelmatig piano en keyboards met mondharmonicaspeler Toots Thielemans. Hij tourde samen met Thielemans in Europa, Japan, Africa en de Verenigde Staten en speelde met hem op grote festivals. Michel Herr speelde met allerlei grote Amerikaanse muzikanten waaronder Chet Baker, Joe Henderson en Johnny Griffin, alsook Europese muzikanten waaronder Palle Mikkelborg, Riccardo Del Fra, Palle Danielsson, Richard Galliano. Michel Herr werkt ook vaak samen met Belgische muzikanten zoals Philip Catherine, Steve Houben en Bert Joris. Hij leidde verschillende jazzgroepen en schreef muziek voor vele jazz ensembles: het Brussels Jazz Orchestra, ACT Big Band, WDR Big Band en andere. In 2008 verscheen een dubbele verzamelaar met allerlei composities van Michel Herr met het Brussels Jazz Orchestra.
