Bei einigen Filmen war er auch für Regie (erstmals für Zwei Fische auf dem Trockenen, 1984) und Drehbuch verantwortlich. Sowohl als Schauspieler als auch als Regisseur wurde er mehrmals für den César nominiert, konnte diese Auszeichnung bisher aber nie gewinnen. Dagegen konnte er den Darstellerpreis bei den Internationalen Filmfestspielen von Cannes 1986 für seine Rolle in dem Film Abendanzug gewinnen. Er teilte ihn sich mit dem britischen Schauspieler Bob Hoskins. Bei den Internationalen Filmfestspielen von Cannes 1994 gewann er für das Drehbuch zu seinem Film Grosse fatigue den Drehbuchpreis.
