Metapsychology is the philosophical study of psychology. Metapsychology, a speculative psychology, is a systematic attempt to discern and describe what lies beyond the facts and laws of psychology, such as the relations between body and mind or concerning the place of the mind in the universe. Topologisessa kuvauksessa selitetään, mihin ilmiö sijoittuu psykoanalyysin jaottelussa id–ego–superego, dynaamisessa kuvauksessa selitetään, kuinka vietit osallistuvat ilmiön syntyyn, ja ekonomisessa kuvauksessa, kuinka psyykkinen energia on jakautunut psyykkisessä ”kojeistossa”. Sana metapsykologia on jäänyt yksinomaan psykoanalyytikkojen käyttöön. Freudin jälkeen tutkijat ovat kehittäneet metapsykologian käsitettä ja lisänneet siihen organistisen (elimellisen), geneettisen (syntyhistoriallisen), psykososiaalisen ja adaptiivisen näkökulman.
  • La métapsychologie est l'ensemble des concepts théoriques formulés par la psychanalyse. Sigmund Freud était d'abord neurologue; ses premières formulations concernant le psychisme humain se basaient sur des schémas inspirés de la neurologie et intégraient donc le système nerveux lui-même, les neurones et synapses. Par la suite, faute de moyens scientifiques (insuffisants à l'époque) Freud décida de laisser de côté cette approche et fonda la métapsychologie, en attendant que la science vienne confirmer ou infirmer les résultats de la psychanalyse.
