Metapolitics then is metalinguistic talk about the analytic, synthetic, and normative language of political inquiry and politics itself. In simple words, it is talk about the way we talk in politics.

Mit seinem Buch „Über Metapolitik“ beschäftigt sich Alain Badiou mit einer "emanzipatorischen" Ontologie der Politik. Mit Metapolitik wird hier Politik als ein am Realen und der Praxis erprobtes Denken verstanden. Bedeutend für Politik ist für ihn dabei eine Demokratie, die sich aus der politischen Dynamik z. B. einer Fabrik- oder Landbesetzung konstituiert. Davon grenzt er alle Formen regulierter und institutionalisierter Demokratie als unpolitisch ab. Gerechtigkeit und Gleichheit, die in jeder institutionalisierten Politik entpolitisiert und stillgelegt werde, könne sich nur im Handeln der einzelnen Menschen herstellen. Aristoteles zitierend stellt er fest "Die Sucher der Gleichheit", damit ist bei Badiou die institutionalisierte Politik gemeint, "entfachen zumeist Aufstände."

Onder metapolitiek wordt politiek verstaan als een in de realiteit en praktijk beproefd denken. Doorslaggevend in deze omschrijving is voor hem daarbij een democratie die zich vormt uit de politieke dynamiek van bijv. een fabrieksbezetting of een huizenkraak. Daarmee grenst hij de term "politiek" af van alle vormen van geregulariseerde en geïnstitutionaliseerde democratie, die hij als "onpolitiek" benoemt. Gelijkheid en rechtvaardigheid, die in elke geïnstitutionaliseerde politieke orde ontpolitiseerd en ingekapseld is, zal in zijn visie slechts via individueel handelen bereikt worden. Aristoteles citerend stelt hij vast dat gelijkheidsstrijders - in de visie van Badiou vormen zij de geïnstitutionaliseerde politiek - de meeste hindernissen opwerpen.
