The initial release of MetaBase was derived entirely from the content of the Nucleic Acids Research (NAR) 2007 Database Issue. The aims of MetaBase, focusing on user contributed content and organization, have been met by the use of the MediaWiki software system, making MetaBase a 'Wiki-Database'.

Metabase listete Anfang 2009 über 2600 biologische Datenbanken. Die immense Menge an Information, aus der Sequenzierung und Zuordnung von Erbinformation aus allen Bereichen der Biologie einerseits, sowie Daten aus Kristallstrukturanalysen andererseits, sowie generell die Komplexität der Biologie machen eine Speicherung in Datenbanken notwendig. Die Offenheit, mit der der freie Zugang zu diesen Daten erlaubt wird, ist insbesondere im medizinischen Bereich ein Motor für Folgeprojekte, deren Daten wiederum als offene Datenbanken zur Verfügung stehen. Ein Verzeichnis aller bestehenden Datenbanken ist daher der notwendige nächste Schritt, der mit Metabase ein informatives, durchsuchbares Kompendium geschaffen hat.
