Fou una campanya bàsicament britànica, centrada en protegir els seus interessos en les refineries de petroli i els aliats britànics Pèrsia i Kuwait; de pas, es podria obrir un nou front a l'est de l'imperi otomà amb la possibilitat de conquerir Bagdad i provocar revoltes entre els súbdits àrabs de l'imperi. La campanya culminà amb la conquesta britànica de Bagdad el març de 1917, després d'intents anteriors poc planificats, però globalment la campanya no donà els resultats esperats pel comandament britànic més enllà de la protecció dels interessos geopolítics britànics.
