Do substancji kurczących należy m. in. : angiotensyna II, endotelina, nukleotydy adeninowe i adenozyna. Natomiast głównymi substancją rozkurczającymi są: ANP oraz NO. Obecne są również receptory dla wielu innych substancji, takich jak: IL-2, PDGF, TGF-β, białek układu dopełniacza, immunoglobulin. Mazagniocyty syntezują substancję mezangialną, w której skład wchodzi m. in. : kolagen (typ IV i V), fibronektyna, lamininy, proteoglikany. Komórki mezangialne charakteryzują się zdolnością egz- i fagocytozy związków wielkocząsteczkowych.. Liczba komórek mezangium, które zachowując zdolność do proliferacji i liczba z wiekiem zwiększa się o około 30-40% .
