Ganz im Stile der 70er bestach es durch seine kantige Form, dem imposanten Kühlergrill mit senkrechten Verstrebungen und eingearbeitetem Monarch-Schriftzug sowie durch viel Chrom und Zierrat. 1978 kam es zu einem Facelift, bei dem die runden Frontscheinwerfer durch eckige Doppelscheinwerfer ersetzt und der Kühlergrill vergrößert wurde. Der Mercury Monarch gehörte zu den sogenannten „mid-size“ (mittelgroßen) Autos. Durch die Auswirkungen der Ölkrise von 1973 sahen sich die US-amerikanischen Hersteller nämlich gezwungen sparsamere, und somit kleinere, Autos zu fabrizieren. Baugleiches Schwestermodell des Mercury Monarch in den USA war übrigens der Ford Granada (nicht identisch mit dem europäischen Modell). Er unterschied sich lediglich durch die Ausstattung und die Embleme vom Mercury. Mäßige Verarbeitung, erhöhte Rostanfälligkeit sowie diverse Rückrufaktionen führten im Spätsommer 1980 zu einer Einstellung der Monarch-Produktion. Der Granada lief immerhin noch bis 1982 vom Band, ehe auch hier das Nachfolgemodell vorgestellt wurde.
