Murphy was elected to the Illinois Senate on November 7, 2006 defeating Democrat Peter Gutzmer to succeed retiring Republican Senator Wendell Jones. Murphy had won the Republican primary on March 21, 2006 defeating Palatine Mayor Rita Mullins.
