- Matthew „McCall“ Freeman ist Bassist der Punkband Rancid. Er wuchs in einem Vorort von Berkeley auf, wo er Tim Armstrong kennen lernte, mit dem er 1987 Operation Ivy gründete. Nach deren Auflösung 1989 spielte er bei Downfall, ein mit Operation Ivy identisches Projekt, sowie bei der politischen Hardcore-Band MDC und rief im Jahre 1991 mit Tim Armstrong Rancid ins Leben. 2004 war er für kurze Zeit bei Social Distortion tätig. Freeman spielt sowohl Punkrock, Ska, Reggae als auch gelegentlich Funk und Rockabilly. Neben Rancid spielt Matt Freeman auch noch in diversen Nebenprojekten, z. B. The Transplants und der Band Devil's Brigade, wo sich der Bassist als Lead-Sänger versucht.

Matt e Tim se conheceram aos cinco anos, e de lá pra cá estão sempre perto: estudaram na mesma escola, tocaram nas mesmas bandas (embora Tim só fosse roadie do MDC), etc. Eles também começaram a apreciar Punk juntos quando Tim pegou uma fita de seu irmão com músicas Punks. Em 1987 eles formaram o Operation Ivy, com Dave e Jesse Mello. Após o Op Ivy, ele foi tocar no MDC, no qual Tim seria roadie. O MDC tinha uma postura de esquerda logo no primeiro show uns policiais invadiram o palco e espancaram os integrantes, principalmente o vocalista. Em 2004, Matt tocou no Social Distortion... mas o projeto paralelo não impediu de que tocasse junto ao Rancid. Matt foi criado somente pelo Pai, e teve que arranjar um emprego logo cedo para ajudar com as despesas em casa. Ele é fanático por carros antigos (inclusive, o do clipe de Salvation pertence a ele). Recentemente apareceram boatos de que o rancid estava no seu fim porque matt estava com cancêr de pulmão. Tudo foi esclarecido e o Rancid continuará ativa apesar da recente saída de Brett Reed. Matt é um baixista extremamente rápido, dando destaque para as músicas "Axiom" e "Maxwell Murder", nas quais se encontram solos grandes e rápidos, que são muito difíceis de se executar por um baixista de nível intermediário.
