Initialement développée et produite par les automobiles René Bonnet (198 ex. ), Matra a repris les acquis de Bonnet en octobre 1964. C'est un petit coupé deux places avec moteur Renault en position transversale centrale arrière conçu par Jacques Hubert. Celui-ci dessinera un châssis-poutre (concept éprouvé) destiné à remplacer le coûteux châssis tubulaire des premiers modèles. Un exemplaire fut offert par Matra au cosmonaute soviétique Youri Gagarine. Via le "sorcier" Gordini, une version plus sportive du moteur est disponible. Celui-ci comporte des culasses à chambres de combustion hémisphériques.
