In order to facilitate the movement of students between European countries, a standardized schedule of higher education diplomas, also known as the Bologna process, was proposed: an undergraduate degree of at least three years called licence or Bachelor's degree, followed by a one-year or two-year diploma called Master, then a doctorate, meant to be obtained in (at least) 3 years.
