He was a Marshall Scholar to Cambridge University, where he received a First in English, and a Danforth Fellow to Stanford University, where he received a PhD in Modern Thought and Literature. Marty grew up in Newark, New Jersey and then the suburban town of Union, New Jersey, where he graduated from Union High School in 1967. He was previously married to Susan Estrich.
