Martin Lesley Crandall is the former keyboardist of The Shins, who also played bass guitar during some live performances, allowing fellow band member Dave Hernandez to play electric guitar. This happened as The Shins move away from the keyboard-drenched reverb of their debut album Oh, Inverted World towards the cleaner guitar driven sounds of their album Chutes Too Narrow.

  • Martin Lesley Crandall is the former keyboardist of The Shins, who also played bass guitar during some live performances, allowing fellow band member Dave Hernandez to play electric guitar. This happened as The Shins move away from the keyboard-drenched reverb of their debut album Oh, Inverted World towards the cleaner guitar driven sounds of their album Chutes Too Narrow. Crandall is originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico, but spent some of his high school years in Las Vegas, Nevada (where he formed a band called Captain Go). He now resides along with the rest of the band in Portland, Oregon. Crandall is featured extensively in Current TV documentary All Eyes on The Shins. Crandall was arrested on January 4 2008, after allegedly assaulting girlfriend Elyse Sewell in a hotel in Sacramento, California; he was charged with domestic assault. The case was dismissed on January 8 2008 due to lack of evidence and no interest from Elyse Sewell to pursue further legal actions. in 2009, Crandall and Jesse Sandoval were replaced in The Shins by Ron Lewis and Joe Plummer.
