Veléz is the former wife of famous trumpet player Keith Johnson. Her son is performance artist,writer/poet, singer, Taj Johnson. Taj appeared as series regular for two years on Parker Lewis Can't Lose. Her brother is the famous percussionist, Gerardo Velez, who has worked with Spyro Gyra, Patti LaBelle, Jimi Hendrix.

Ihr Produzent Craig Leon fragte Marley danach; schließlich erklärten sich Marley und dessen früherer Produzent Lee "Scratch" Perry einverstanden, Veléz' nächstes Album Escape From Babylon (1976) zu produzieren. Auf dem Album sind auch zwei Marley-Coverversionen (Bend Down Low, Get Up, Stand Up) sowie eine gemeinsame Komposition von Marley und Veléz (Disco Night) vertreten. Nach Escape From Babylon veröffentlichte Veléz zwei weitere Alben, American Heartbeat (1977) und Angels Of The Future Past (1989), bevor sie in die Filmbranche wechselte und in einigen Filmen und Fernsehserien Nebenrollen und Gastauftritte hatte. 1997 spielte sie in 187 – Eine tödliche Zahl neben Samuel L.
