Desde las altas cumbres chilenas, el Marmolejo se aprecia arrinconado hacia el este, como eterno hermano y vecino del Volcán San José y del Nevado Piuquenes (o Nevado San Juan. ) Alcanzar la cima del Marmolejo es una empresa ardua y exigente en capacidad física y tiempo, pero un lugar privilegiado desde donde apreciar la curvatura de la tierra y la vastedad de los valles argentinos. El primer ascenso de esta montaña fue conseguido por los socios del Club Alemán Andino de Santiago Krückel, Maas y Sattler en 1928. Para hacer esto, los tres montañistas cruzaron la frontera y subieron el Marmolejo por su vertiente argentina. El primer ascenso realizado completamente por territorio chileno fue realizado en 1943 por la llamada "cordada de oro" formada también por montañistas del Club Alemán Andino de Santiago. Los miembros de esta cordada eran Krahl, Bachmann y Fergadiot.
