Princess Marie José of Belgium (Marie José Charlotte Sophie Louisa Amélie Henriette Olga Gabrielle) (4 August 1906 – 27 January 2001), was the last Queen of Italy. Her thirty-five day reign as queen consort earned her the affectionate nickname the May Queen. Princess Marie José was born in Ostend, Belgium, the youngest child and only daughter of Albert I, King of the Belgians and his consort, Duchess Elisabeth in Bavaria.

Her thirty-five day reign as queen consort earned her the affectionate nickname the May Queen. Princess Marie José was born in Ostend, Belgium, the youngest child and only daughter of Albert I, King of the Belgians and his consort, Duchess Elisabeth in Bavaria. At birth, she held the title of Princess of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha until its use was discontinued at the end of the First World War. She was named for her maternal grandmother, Infanta Maria José of Portugal. In October 1939, Princess Marie-José was made President of the Red Cross in Italy. The Princess and Duchess of Aosta attended the ceremony where Marie-José was installed as President of the Italian Red Cross.

In Italië, dat sowieso niet werd overmand door koningsgezinde gevoelens, had ze daar weinig succes mee. Het paar kreeg vier kinderen: Maria Pia Victor Emanuel Maria Gabrielle Maria Beatrix In 1946 waren Umberto en Marie-José gedurende 33 dagen koning en koningin van Italië. Toen maakte een referendum een einde aan de monarchie. Het paar ging gescheiden in ballingschap. Umberto vestigde zich in Portugal, Marie-José met haar kinderen in Zwitserland. Marie-José stierf op 94-jarige leeftijd in Genève aan longkanker. Zij werd op 2 februari 2001 begraven in de abdij van Hautecombe, waar ook haar man, die in 1983 was overleden, begraven is. Jej małżeństwo okazało się niezbyt szczęśliwe. 9 maja 1946 roku została koronowana na królową Włoch. Panowanie jej męża trwało 33 dni. Razem z mężem wyjechała do Portugalii. Po pewnym czasie, cierpiąca na chorobę oczu, królowa przeniosła się do Szwajcarii, gdzie panował bardziej sprzyjający dla niej klimat. Ze względu na fakt, że stosunki między Humbertem i Marią nie uległy poprawie, królowa postanowiła pozostać tam na stałe. Małżonkowie nie zerwali jednak ze sobą kontaktów, odnosili się do siebie bardzo uprzejmie, a nawet z wyraźną kurtuazją, król przysyłał często żonie wspaniałe bukiety kwiatów i perfumy. Królowa poświęcała się działalności charytatywnej i organizowaniu imprez artystycznych, pisała także książki o swoich rodzicach i o dynastii sabaudzkiej, dzięki czemu odzyskała po części utracony prestiż.
