- Marcus Belgrave is a jazz trumpet player from Detroit, born in Chester, Pennsylvania. He has recorded with a variety of famous musicians, bandleaders, and record labels since the 1950s. Notable among them are: Ray Charles, Charles Mingus, Gunther Schuller, Motown Records, Tribe Records, Blue Note Records, A. Spencer Barefield, The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Rodney Whitaker, and Carl Craig. He has performed with Ray Charles, Max Roach, Ella Fitzgerald, Charles Mingus, Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis Jr. , Dizzy Gillespie and John Sinclair, amongst others. Belgrave has a reputation for cultivating young jazz talent. Some examples are: Rodney Whitaker, Kenny Garrett, Regina Carter, James Carter, Geri Allen, Bob Hurst, Karriem Riggins, and Carlos McKinney. A popular clinician and instructor, Belgrave is a frequent faculty member at Stanford Jazz Workshop and is currently visiting professor of jazz trumpet at the Oberlin Conservatory. In 2006 he spent one week in the summer program taking place in University of California Berkeley called the Young Musicians Program (YMP) helping out student with coaching and private lessons.

Später hat er mit Max Roach, Charles Mingus, Ella Fitzgerald, Bud Powell, Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis Jr. , Dizzy Gillespie und John Sinclair gearbeitet. Seit 1988 ist er festes Mitglied in Wynton Marsalis’ Lincoln Jazz Orchestra. Er ist auf unzähligen Jazzalben zu hören, außerdem ist er Inspiration und Förderer von Musikern der jüngeren Generation wie etwa Kenny Garrett, Regina Carter, James Carter, Geri Allen, Bob Hurst und Carlos McKinney. Er war an Aufnahmen von Charles Mingus, Gunther Schuller, George Gruntz, Geri Allen, Carl Craig, Cecil Payne und David Murray beteiligt, hat aber auch als Studiomusiker für Motown Records, Blue Note Records oder Tribe Records gearbeitet. Belgrave, der mit der Sängerin Joan Bow Belgrave verheiratet ist, lehrt beim Stanford Jazz Workshop und ist derzeit (2008) Gastprofessor am Oberlin Conservatory.
