Mar Thoma VIII was the Metropolitan of the Malankara church in Kerala, India from 1809 to 1816. Unlike previous Metropolitans (bishops) of the Malankara church he was not from the Pakalomattom family, but was only related to that family. He was a man of vision. It was during his time Malankara church opened the first formal educational institution, in Kerala. With the opening of Kottayam Suryani Seminary, modern education dawned in Kerala.
