Headquartered in Reutlingen, Baden-Württemberg, the company has additional production centres in Tübingen and Karlstein am Main as well as international manufacturing sites in Hungary, Slovakia, Israel, China and Taiwan. The company was founded by Dieter Manz as the GmbH Manz Automatisierungstechnik in 1987. It initially focused on industrial automation and robotics, and today continues to supply automated systems as part of a broader range of products. As of 2011, its automation business units are focused on systems for the production of printed circuit boards, packaging and carbide cutting tools. Manz has developed a significant presence in the solar power industry, which is the firm's largest business segment by revenue as of the first quarter of 2011. Its activities in this sector focus on the development and supply of integrated systems for the production of silicon solar cells and thin-film modules. In 2010 the company established a partnership with Würth Solar (part of the Würth industrial group) for the exclusive licensing of its CIGS solar cell production technology, while in 2008 it entered a strategic alliance with Rofin-Sinar and Masdar PV to develop new technologies for the production of thin-film solar cells. The other major business area of Manz is the supply of systems for the production of flat panel displays, a market it first entered in 1994. The company's other, smaller business lines provide systems for the production of lithium-ion batteries and fuel cells on an industrial scale. Manz also established a vacuum coating technology development centre in 2010.
