Participó en el desembarco de Alhucemas y fue jefe del Estado Mayor del General Sanjurjo. Aunque ofreció su apoyo a la subida al poder del general Primo de Rivera, posteriormente participó en intrigas contra él, lo que le valió ser juzgado por traición y pasar a la reserva. Cuando llegó la República, fue sacado de esta situación y nombrado Jefe del Estado Mayor Central del Ejército. Participó en la Sanjurjada del 10 de agosto de 1932, por lo que fue de nuevo retirado de la actividad militar por parte del gobierno. En 1934 colaboró con Franco en la represión de la revuelta de Asturias, por lo que el gobierno radical-cedista, le otorgó el cargo de director general de Aeronáutica y de la III Inspección del ejército. A principios de 1936, con el Frente Popular en el poder, volvió a conspirar contra el gobierno lo que motivó que fuera alejado de la capital, siendo enviado como comandante general de Baleares. El 19 de julio de 1936, al producirse la sublevación que dio origen a la guerra civil, aprovechó este puesto para rebelar las plazas de Mallorca e Ibiza y dejarlas en manos de los rebeldes. Pero quiso ir más allá y, tomando un hidroavión, se presentó en Barcelona para tratar de conseguir el levantamiento de esta ciudad. Tras destituir y arrestar al general Francisco Llano de la Encomienda, fracasó en los siguientes planes y fue arrestado. Conducido al barco-prisión Uruguay, fue juzgado y condenado a muerte, no sin antes ser obligado a confesar por radio el fracaso del levantamiento y su rendición. El 12 de agosto de 1936, fue fusilado junto a otros militares en el castillo de Montjuic en Barcelona.
