- Often misused to refer to the Mandinka people, who constitute a branch of the Mandé: Mandinka people Mandé or Manden refers to a large group of related ethnic groups in West Africa who speak any one of the many Mande languages spread throughout the region. Various Mandé groups are found in Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Chad, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal and Sierra Leone. Linguistically, the Mandé languages belong to a divergent branch of the Niger-Congo family, and are divided into two primary groups; East Mandé and West Mandé. The Mandinka people, a branch of the Mandé, are credited with the founding of the largest ancient West African empires. Other larger groups include the Malinke, Bambara and Dyula. Smaller, lesser known groups of Mandé peoples include the Ligbi, Vai and Bissa. Mande peoples inhabit various environments, from coastal rainforests to the sparse Sahel and Sahara, and as such have a wide range of cultures and beliefs. Most profess Islamic belief, but this ranges between orthodox Sunni Islam to cultural Islam with many aspects of traditional religions practised.

Mande zamieszkują Mali, Gwineę, Senegal, Gambię, Wybrzeże Kości Słoniowej, Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso i południową Mauretanię. Dzielą się na dwie główne grupy: Mande-tan i Mande-fu oraz wiele plemion i grup etnicznych, m. in. Malinke, Bambara, Kpelle, Soninke, Diula. U wielu plemion, zwłaszcza u Bambara, zachowały się tradycyjne afrykańskie wierzenia i zwyczaje. Tradycyjnym zajęciem ludów Mande jest rolnictwo, a także w mniejszym zakresie chów zwierząt (zwłaszcza na sprzedaż i w celach prestiżowych), rybołówstwo, łowiectwo i handel. Struktura społeczna opiera się na rodach patrylinearnych. W średniowieczu ludy Mande tworzyły silne ośrodki cywilizacyjne w dorzeczu środkowego i górnego Nigru – Imperium Ghany i Imperium Mali. Ludy Mande posługują się językami mande.
