Malvinas Day, officially Day of the War Veteran and the Fallen in the Malvinas War (Día del Veterano de Guerra y de los Caídos en la Guerra de las Malvinas) is a public holiday in Argentina, celebrated each year on April 2. Malvinas Day was first introduced on November 22, 2000, and replaced the Day of Argentine Sovereignty over the Malvinas, Sandwich and South Atlantic Islands (Día de los Derechos Argentinos sobre las Islas Malvinas, Sandwich y del Atlántico Sur) observed on June 10, which had until then commemorated the appointment by Buenos Aires of Luis Vernet as governor of the islands in 1829. Malvinas Day is not observed in the Falklands, although a related holiday called Liberation Day is celebrated on June 14 to mark the end of the war.
  • El 22 de noviembre del 2000, el Poder Legislativo argentino sancionó la Ley Nº 25.370, por la cual se declara al día 2 de abril como Día del Veterano y de los Caídos en la Guerra de las Malvinas. Dicha ley se promulgaría finalmente el 15 de diciembre de ese mismo año. Fue luego modificada el 7 de junio de 2006 para declarar inamovible al feriado nacional, por lo cual no podrá ser trasladado al lunes anterior o siguiente para conformar un fin de semana largo. El 2 de abril de 1982 las Fuerzas Armadas de Argentina desembarcaron en Puerto Argentino/Stanley para iniciar la recuperación de las Islas Malvinas, ocupadas por el Reino Unido desde 1833. Esto desencadenó la Guerra de las Malvinas que se desarrolló desde ese día hasta la rendición argentina el día 14 de junio de 1982.
