In Gambia they represent approx. 39% of the country's total population, in Guinea 32% and in Guinea-Bissau 14%. They speak Malinké or Maninkakan, one of the Manding languages. The Malinké are generally Muslim, having abandoned earlier pantheist beliefs. Traditionally they are subsistence farmers, growing small cash crops of peanuts and millet in the Sahel Africa region. The "Malinke Empire" is an ethnic entity governed from its capital of Kangaba since the 8th century.

Jahrhundert bekannt, dessen Reichtum und Prunk legendär war und von arabischen Reisenden weitervermittelt wurde. 1324 reiste der damalige König von Mali, Kankan Mussa, von Mali nach Mekka und hielt Zwischenstation in Kairo. Er verschenkte dabei so viel Gold, dass nach damaligen Quellen der Kurs des Goldes auf die Dauer von 12 Jahren auf die Hälfte sank. Das Königreich von Mali mit einer Fläche von ca. 1 Million km², wies zahlreiche Ministerien auf mit weitreichenden Entwicklungsplänen. Kankan Mussa ließ seine Agrarminister Experimente für verbesserte Reissorten auf Versuchsfeldern unternehmen. Er holte nordafrikanische Architekten ins Land, um die lokale Architektur zu verbessern, woraus als Mischkultur die sogenannte „sudanesische Architektur“ entstand (z. B. ersichtlich anhand der Moschee von Djenné in Mali, dem größten Lehmbauwerk der Welt).
