Erikson's series is complex with a wide scope, and presents the narratives of a large cast of characters. Erikson's plotting presents a complicated series of events in the world upon which the Malazan Empire is located. Each volume is relatively self-contained for the first five novels, in that the primary conflict of each novel is resolved within that novel. However, many underlying characters and events are interwoven throughout the works of the series, binding it together. The Malazan world was co-created by Steven Erikson and Ian Cameron Esslemont in the early 1980s as a backdrop to their GURPS roleplaying campaign. In 2005 Esslemont began publishing his own series of five novels set in the same world, beginning with Night of Knives. Although Esslemont's books are published under a different series title - Novels of the Malazan Empire - Esslemont and Erikson collaborated on the storyline for the entire fifteen-book project and Esslemont's novels are considered as canonical and integral to the series as Erikson's own. The Malazan series is often compared both to Glen Cook's Black Company, (to whom the seventh book is dedicated) and George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series. By 2006, the series had sold 250,000 copies.

Der erste Teil des sechsten Originalbandes ist in der deutschen Übersetzung im September 2007 erschienen. Die Buchreihe wurde von der Kritik sehr positiv aufgenommen und ist in Europa ein (für Fantasybücher) recht großer Erfolg beschieden, während auf dem amerikanischen Markt die Bücher nur mit Verzögerung erschienen sind. Nicht direkt Teil der Reihe, aber in derselben Welt angesiedelt, sind die Malaz-Romane von Eriksons Freund Ian Cameron-Esslemont, mit dem er zusammen die Welt von Malaz erschaffen hat.

In Italia sono stati pubblicati finora i primi sei volumi della saga. Il mondo di Malazan fu creato da Steven Erikson e da Ian Cameron Esslemont nei primi anni ottanta come ambientazione per un gioco di ruolo. Successivamente scrissero una sceneggiatura cinematografica intitolata Gardens of the Moon, che non suscitò interessi significativi. I due autori decisero quindi di scrivere ognuno la propria saga ambientata nel mondo da loro creato. Erikson scrisse il romanzo Gardens of the Moon nel periodo 1991-1992, ma il suo lavoro fu pubblicato solo nel 1999. Il contratto con la casa editrice Bantam UK prevedeva la scrittura di altri nove libri, per un compenso di 500.000 sterline, la cifra più alta mai pagata per una serie fantasy. Il primo lavoro pubblicato di Esslemont fu il racconto Night of Knives, uscito in edizione limitata nel 2005 e per il mercato di massa nel 2007. Erikson ha dichiarato che i due autori collaboreranno nell'elaborazione di una esaustiva guida alla saga, The Encyclopedia Malaz, cha sarà pubblicata dopo la fine della saga principale. Da notare che il titolo inglese dell'intera saga (The Malazan Book of the Fallen) è tradotto erroneamente nella versione italiana con La caduta di Malazan; una traduzione più rispettosa delle intenzioni dell'autore (oltre che della lingua inglese) sarebbe stata "Il Libro Malazan dei Caduti".
