Maktar (Mactaris) is a town and Roman site in northern Tunisia. It is located at around 35°51′38″N 9°12′21″E / 35.86056°N 9.20583°E / 35.86056; 9.20583. The town was founded by Numidians. It was destroyed by Banu Hillal tribe in the 10th century. The modern town, liying at an altitude of 1100m above sea level, stands on the other side of the ravine from the Roman remains and is known for its scenic views.

The town has a continental climate with cold winters and warm summers with occasional snowfall during the months of January and February.

La ciutat té 12.942 habitants i és capçalera d'una delegació amb 34.860 habitants el 2004. A kla seva rodalia es troba el important lloc arqueològic de Maktaris o Mactaris amb les restes de la ciutat romana, amb nombrosos llocs d'interes (Schola Juvenes, fòrum, termes, amfiteatre, temple de Baccus, arc de triomf dedicat a Trajà, basílica i tombes bizantines...). L'activitat turística és limitada, i la majoria de la població viu de l'agricultura, però el govern ha establert a la ciutat una zona industrial. Ciutat fundada pels numides com a punt de defensa contra els cartaginesos, fou poblada pels púnics després de la conquesta i destrucció de Cartago pels romans i va servir finalment sota els romans i bizantins com a defensa contra els berbers. Va obtenir l'estatut de ciutat lliure el 46 aC i fou colònia romana el 176, moment en què va arribar al seu punt de màxim desenvolupament. Al segle III fou seu d'un bisbe. Fou destruida pels vàndals i després al segle XI pels Banu Hilal. El lloc arqueològic de Maktaris es proper al sud-est.

Elle est localisée à la limite entre le nord-ouest et le centre-ouest de la Tunisie, à 150 kilomètres au sud-ouest de Tunis et à 70 kilomètres au sud-est du Kef. Avec une altitude de 900 mètres, elle constitue le chef-lieu le plus élevé du pays. Chef-lieu d'une délégation du gouvernorat de Siliana comptant 31 139 habitants en 2006, la ville compte 12 942 habitants en 2004. Elle est surtout connue pour son important site archéologique dont il subsiste de nombreux vestiges exposés dans un parc archéologique et dans un petit musée sur le site.
