Major League Soccer (MLS) is a professional soccer league based in the United States and sanctioned by United States Soccer Federation (U.S. Soccer). The league comprises 15 teams, 14 in the U.S. and one in Canada. MLS represents the top tier of the American and Canadian soccer pyramids. Major League Soccer was founded in 1993 as part of the United States' bid to host the 1994 FIFA World Cup. The first season took place in 1996 beginning with 10 teams.

La nuova franchigia, che sarà operata da Lew Wolff (proprietario degli Oakland Athletics) e Ian Fisher, avrà invece un nuovo stadio vicino all'aeroporto di San Jose a partire dal 2010, e nel frattempo giocherà scegliendo lo stadio più adeguato a seconda del match. Nel 2009 la Mls è arrivata ad avere 15 squadre, con l'ingresso del Seattle Sounders Football Club, che giocherà al Qwest Field e che ha ingaggiato come designated player lo svedese, ex Arsenal, Fredrik Ljungberg.

Säsongen 2008 gör San Jose Earthquakes comeback i ligan, efter två års bortavaro, vilket innebar att MLS innehöll 14 lag, fortfarande fördelade på två conferencer. Ligan kom att utökas med ytterligare ett lag, till säsongen 2009, då Seattle Sounders FC hade valts in som nytt expansionslag. I slutet på februari 2008 tillkännagavs att även Philadelphia Union skall komma med till säsongen 2010. Ligan kommer då att bestå av 16 lag. I mars 2009 meddelade ligan att Vancouver och Portland kommer att bli de två expansionslag som börjar spela från och med säsongen 2011.
