Mahmut Demir, is a former Turkish Olympic medalist, World and European champion sports wrestler in the Super heavyweight class (>100kg). He won the gold medal at the 1996 Olympics in Men's Freestyle wrestling. He was born on January 21, 1970 in Suluova district of Amasya Province in northern Turkey. Mahmut Demir began wrestling in 1984. Already in 1986, he gained his first medal at the Balkan Juniors Championships in Yugoslavia.

A sports hall in his hometown Suluova is named after him, where the 2006 European Champion Clubs Freestyle Wrestling Cup was held. He is the honorary president of Amasya Şekerspor Kulübü, a club dedicated to wrestling sports in his hometown.

Atlanta 1996 Olimpiyat Oyunları finalinde Beyaz Rusyalı eski olimpiyat şampiyonu Alexander Medvedev'in oğlu Aleksei Medvedev'i yenerek serbest güreşte 28 yıl aradan sonra Türkiye'ye altın madalya kazandırdı. 1997 yılında güreşi bıraktı. Doğduğu yerde yapılan bir spor salonuna kendisinin ismi verildi. Şu anda kendisi FILA nezdinde düzenlenen 2006 yılı Avrupa Şampiyon Kulüpler Kupası Şampiyonluğunu kazanan Amasya Şekerspor Kulübü'nün onursal başkanlığı yanında Amasya Pancar Ekiciler Kooperatifi Yönetim Kurulu Başkanlığı ve Amasya Şeker Fabrikası Yönetim Kurulu başkanlığını da sürdürmektedir. Amasya'nın Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Üstün Hizmet Madalyası sahibi tek ismidir. Evli iki çocuk babasıdır.
